Guru Purnima is celebrated on the full moon day of Ashadha,this year on July 10, 2025.It is a festival that is dedicated to honour the teachers, mentors and anyone who act as a guide in our path of life. This festival has roots dating back to early history of India and is a heartfelt way of saying, “Thank you” to our gurus(mentors).
Guru Purnima is celebrated because it marks the birth anniversary of Maharishi Ved Vyasa Ji, he was the sage who compiled the Vedas and wrote the Mahabharata contributing to the great Indian history. It is also known as “Vyasa Purnima” . It is mentioned in yogic lore that Lord Shiva is believed to be the Adi Guru, who first shared his wisdom with the seven sages known to be the Saptarishi’s.
In Buddhism, Guru Purnima is known to be celebrated after Gautama Buddha delivered his first sermon after attaining his enlightenment. Also, in Jainism, it is the day when Mahavira accepted his first disciple.
Guru Purnima is traditionally celebrated as, when devotees offer flowers, sweets, and gratitude to their gurus. Many students in devotion also keep fasts and attend satsangs. Schools and spiritual communities host tribute events for the gurus.
As a fun fact-in ancient gurukuls, Guru Purnima also marked the return of students after summer break making it a spiritual ‘back to school’ day!
