INTRODUCTION
Every year on June 5th, millions worldwide unit for World Environment Day – the United Nation’s largest global platform for environmental awareness and action. In 2025, the spotlight turns to one of the most pressing crises of our time: Plastic Pollution.
With over 400 million tons of plastic produced annually-half of which is single-use- our oceans, wildlife and even human health are at risk.
Micro plastics have been found in rain water, food, and even human blood, providing that plastic pollution is now a global emergency.
This World Environment Day2025,the theme “Beat Plastic Pollution: If you Can’t Reuse it, refuse it!” calls for urgent action to eliminate plastic waste and transition to a circular economy.
The Plastic Crisis: Key Facts
- 🌊11 million metric tons of plastic enter the oceans each year – equivalent to a garbage truck every minute.
- 🐢Over 1 million marine animals die annually from plastics ingestion and entanglement.
- 🔥Plastic pollution is set to triple by 2060 if no action is taken.

✅ The UN Plastic Treaty (2024)
A historic Global Plastics Treaty was adopted in 2024, committing nations to legally binding measures to:
- Ban unnecessary single-use plastics.
- Hold corporations accountable for plastic waste.
- Boost recycling and eco-friendly alternatives.
✅ Countries Leading the Change
- Rwanda (one of the cleanest nations) banned plastic bags in 2008.
- India outlawed 19 single-use plastic items in 2022.
- Canada implemented a “Zero Plastic Waste by 2030”
